Our research focuses on the ecology of native and managed ecosystems that sustain people and other organisms within the community of life. Native protected landscapes near towns or urban areas provide numerous ecosystem services for most of humanity and can serve as important conservation lands for wildlife. 54% of people on Earth – and 82% of people in North America – now live in cities. Managed ecosystems such as residential and agricultural landscapes can enhance human well-being and provide opportunities to develop successful models for sustainable human-environment outcomes.
